JOB DESCRIPTION


Job Title: Transportation Manager

Immediate Supervisor: Director of Operations Employees Supervised: Route Drivers and Semi-Drivers


General Description/Position Summary

The Transportation Manager is responsible for the day-to-day management of the transportation operations ensuring shipments into and out of the St. Louis Area Foodbank (SLAFB) are handled quickly, safely and within budget constraints. This includes planning and coordinating the activities of the drivers, oversight of transportation equipment, coordinating with outside companies, preparing budgets, developing safety procedures, and making sure shipping documentation is prepared correctly.


Duties and Responsibilities

  • Plan, direct and coordinate transportation operations including dispatching, routing, and tracking transportation vehicles
  • Develop and execute daily transportation routing for delivery and pickup
  • Establish and maintain driver routing to maximize efficiency and service utilizing routing software
  • Coordinate logistics of inbound and outbound transportation of outside fleet
  • Supervision of all transportation staff
  • Promotes a safety culture by evaluating the safety performance of all drivers
  • Perform performance reviews and offer feedback for all transportation staff
  • Coordinate DOT physicals for transportation staff and lead DOT inspection reporting
  • Oversee maintenance schedules of fleet
  • Monitor fuel spend and submit monthly reporting
  • Complete ride-along with drivers and Driver Performance Evaluation annually
  • Develop SOP's and manage policies for drivers and transportation workers
  • Analyze expenditures and other financial information needed to develop plans, policies, and budgets for improving services through cost-effective transportation strategies
  • Develop, manage and report logistics key performance indicators (KPIs) such as logistics spend, on time delivery, load efficiency, etc.
  • Establish corrective actions for underperforming metrics to ensure performance standards are met
  • Lead recruitment, training, team building, and mentorship of the transportation team to support employee engagement and retention
  • Serve as member of the Foodbank's Disaster Response Team
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned

Knowledge. Skills and Abilities

  • Experience with transportation; routing, scheduling, forecasting, planning, logistics, delivery performance, continuous improvement, and operational excellence
  • In-depth knowledge of transportation operations, Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) and Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations
  • Proficient in usage of transportation optimization software to perform routing, scheduling, and shipment tracking
  • Strong customer focus
  • Strong analytical skills and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent organization and time management skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft applications and routing software; Roadnet and/or AGI a plus
  • Ability to manage multiple projects with attention to detail, ability to handle interruptions, maintains focus on tasks and produce accurate work
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with diverse stakeholders
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Business or Logistics preferred, or comparable experience of one to three years in transportation operations for a distributor, retailer, or manufacturing company
  • One to three years of transportation experience managing 15 or more drivers preferred
  • One to three years of onsite driver management experience preferred
  • Must be able to pass pre-employment drug screening and criminal background check

Working Condition

Work is performed in warehouse with a significant amount of walking on concrete surfaces. Entrances may be open and work conditions during the summer months can be very hot, and during the winter very cold. Employee may be going in and out of freezers and coolers with extreme variations in temperature. Workspace could be very dusty, and on occasions can be noisy due to the traffic of motorized vehicles operated in the building. Periodically may work outside and be exposed to the elements. Employee may be exposed to spoiled food and sharp objects due to working with damaged product. Work involves moving boxes and employee must lift, bend, stoop, pick up and move objects up to 75 pounds. Work involves using manual pallet jacks and therefore requires an ability to push and pull pallets over 2,000 pounds.


Special events and other projects related to this position may require evening and / or weekend work. Meeting attendance may require overnight travel.
