GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

The Health & Wellness Intern is a volunteer leader who supports St. Louis Area Foodbank's Program Department. The Health & Wellness Intern will enhance our healthcare partnerships by incorporating Food Fairs, Mobile Markets, Advocacy, and Nutrition Education into our model. The Health & Wellness Intern will interface with partnering agencies, residents of the 26 counties that the SLAFB Serves, and Food Bank staff. The intern may also work with other strategic direction initiatives that the SLAFB is spearheading for growth and success.

RESPONSIBILITES:


  • Work with Program staff members to create and/or update logic models, program and project plans and other foundational materials.
  • Conduct neighbor health & wellness surveying in-person and/or over-the-phone with the intention to develop thoughtful analytics of the communities that we serve.
  • Data entry into databases and Microsoft applications and analysis.
  • Identify, cultivate and steward relationships with health/wellness, financial, housing, mental health and other self-sufficiency spaces to provide warm handoffs to neighbors.
  • Research best practices and theories for Foodbanks, Hospitals, & the Health & Wellness Position at the St. Louis Area Foodbank in urban and rural communities.
  • Work with community partnerships to enhance program efficiency and productivity.
  • Working with partners at events, committees, and through networking, public relationships, advocacy, and speaking engagements related to social determinants of health.
  • Following program operation and activities adhere to legal guidelines and internal policies.
  • Work with all Programs staff to complete other duties as assigned.

In Order to gain a full understanding of the Food Bank and our scope of work, intern will spend time in a variety of program areas including, but not limited to:

  • Food Fairs, Mobile Markets, Summer Feeding, School Pantries, & Food on the Move
  • SNAP Outreach team in various capacities
  • Nutrition and wellness education outreaches/classes in various capacities
  • Volunteer Center, Operations, Product Sourcing, & Philanthropy
  • Ride with a driver for food distribution and/or pick-up
  • Inspections of our Agency & CSFP partners.
  • Read articles and/or view selected webinars related to food insecurity, food bank programming, and advocacy.

QUALIFICATIONS:


  • Currently enrolled in an accredited higher college or university
  • Non-profit experience preferred.
  • Strong written, verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with different types of personalities.
  • Proficient with Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other web-based applications
  • Broad understanding of evaluation, programs, theory of change, and logic models.
  • Ability to work independently and within a team.
  • Reliable transportation and valid licenses.
  • Passion for the Foodbank mission and the ability to demonstrate SLAFB's Core Values: Stewardship, Teamwork, Agility and Respect

TIME REQUIREMENTS


There is flexibility with this internship, and as an expectation, the Health & Wellness Intern will work with his/her supervisor to determine a schedule and hours to fulfill academic requirements or personal experience. This is subject to change if an individual need to increase or decrease total hours of internship. As schedules are made and set, community events for the intern to attend will be scheduled.
