General Description/Position Summary:

The Director of Human Resources is an integral member of the Foodbank's Leadership Team and provides Human Resources thought leadership to the organization. This is a highly visible role, reporting directly to the Chief People Officer, and helps support all Human Resources functions including but not limited to: benefits administration; talent acquisition; employee onboarding; employee relations; performance management; training and development; diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives; compensation; compliance; Human Resources Operations; and culture. The Director of Human Resources serves as a trusted advisor and coach to the Foodbank's leadership teams and to staff.

What you'll do day-to-day:

  • Lead: As a Human Resources subject matter expert, serve as a critical and valued member of the Foodbank's Leadership Team.
  • Strategize: In partnership with the Chief People Officer, provide insightful, innovative thinking and problem solving on critical issues across the organization.
  • Build: Support the articulation and realization of a culture that is aligned with the Foodbank's values and in which diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging are deeply embedded.
  • Develop: Help drive the development and evolution of our team and culture by supporting the Chief People Officer in creating an employee experience, compensation strategy, and training and development program that keeps our amazing workforce effective, motivated, and engaged.
  • Drive Change: Shepherd staff through organizational change in a manner that is affirming, engaging and inspiring.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Benefits Administration

  • Develop a thorough understanding of the St. Louis Area Foodbank's benefit plans and assist with answering employees' benefits-related questions.
  • Responsible for directing and planning the day-to-day operations of group benefit programs (group health, dental, vision, short-term and long-term disability, worker's compensation, life insurance flexible spending plan, retirement plans, etc.).
  • Oversee all benefits processing: employee benefit enrollments, terminations, changes, beneficiaries, disability, workers compensation, accident and death claims, COBRA, etc.
  • Ensure the St. Louis Area Foodbank's benefits package remains competitive in the market. Examine possible plan designs and benefits cost changes. Partner with benefits broker to negotiate rates during annual benefits renewal.
  • Serve as primary contract for plan vendors and third-party administrators.
  • Coordinate transfer of data to external contacts for services, premiums and plan administration.
  • Document and maintain administrative procedures for assigned benefit processes.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable government regulations. Ensure timeliness and accuracy of required reporting and fees.
  • Oversee maintenance of employee benefit files, maintain group benefits database and update employee demographic/payroll records.
  • Gather employee data and oversee the processing of monthly billings and the preparation of vouchers for payment of administrative fees for all group plans.
  • Develop communication tools to enhance understanding of the company's benefits package.
  • Design and distribute materials for employee onboarding and new hire orientation, open enrollment and summary plan descriptions.
  • Provide training and "People First" customer service/support to staff regarding their benefits.

Talent Acquisition/Employee Onboarding

  • Oversee and support the talent acquisition function: posting of open requisitions, supporting hiring managers through the selection/interview and hiring processes, onboarding and orientation of new hires, etc.
  • Manage all relevant talent acquisition data in the Foodbank's Applicant Tracking System.
  • Partner with Marketing and Communications to harness social media for recruitment and employer branding purposes.
  • Develop and implement talent acquisition strategies to identify compelling ways to share our value proposition and source top talent in a competitive talent market.
  • Ensure hiring managers are trained in and utilize talent acquisition best practices.
  • Improve candidate sourcing capabilities.
  • Employ sourcing strategies that focus on building a diverse workforce.

Employee Relations

  • Establish and maintain positive working relationships with all St. Louis Area Foodbank team members; demonstrate extreme discretion and confidentiality with regard to personal information and personnel issues.
  • Provide consultation and guidance to management and senior leaders on critical Human Resources issues related to employee performance deficiencies and standard of conduct concerns.
  • Ensure progressive discipline processes are administered in a fair and equitable manner.
  • In partnership with the Chief People Officer, conduct confidential and thorough internal investigations in cases of reported allegations of harassment, discrimination, or other misconduct. Present recommendation regarding appropriate outcome to the Chief People Officer.
  • Conduct exit interviews with team members and analyze feedback to identify trends regarding employee separation to determine recommendations to address potential areas of improvement.
  • Work with management to complete necessary research and preparation for state unemployment hearings.

Performance Management

  • Responsible for being the main point of contact and a subject matter expert on the Foodbank's performance management process.
  • Spearhead the smooth transition of a previously paper performance management process to one that is done electronically through a HRIS system. Design training documents and lead training for the new online performance management process.

Training and Development

  • Assist the Chief People Officer with the development and implementation of various Training and Leadership Development initiatives to support staff with their ongoing professional development.
  • Conduct needs analyses and create learning initiatives to develop employees, managers, and leaders while maximizing productivity and effectiveness.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Initiatives:

  • Support the Chief People Officer to develop, implement, and champion diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) practices to foster a welcoming and inclusive environment, in alignment with the Foodbank's values.
  • Partner with the Chief People Officer and the Marketing & Communication Team to design and execute intentional and meaningful DEI initiatives and programming focused on education and engagement.

Compensation

  • Work closely with the Chief People Officer to ensure salary ranges are market competitive for the ever-changing labor environment and internally equitable, to enhance the attraction and retention of top-quality staff, while balancing the financial needs of the organization.

Compliance

  • Serve as a subject matter expert on all Human Resources policies and procedures. Answer Human Resources-related questions from staff with clarity and provide excellent customer service.
  • Ensure uniform and equitable application of policies and procedures to protect both the organization and employee interests.
  • Ensure compliance with local, state and federal laws. Ensure business processes comply with regulatory and legal requirements to minimize risk.
  • Ensure Human Resources policies are documented, updated and applied consistently across the company.
  • Maintain knowledge of existing and proposed federal and state laws/regulations affecting Human Resources management.

Human Resources Operations

  • Implement and leverage Human Resources technologies to perform workforce analytics; create manager and employee self-service, dashboards and reports to drive transparency; and to facilitate data-based decisions.
  • Ensure that all Human Resources Information Systems (HRIS) are being utilized optimally.

Culture

  • Serve as a key member of the Foodbank's Culture Committee as well as the Activities Committee to help foster a positive work culture and provide logistical support for annual staff events.
  • Partner with leaders to create a culture and work environment that encourages employee engagement and inspires performance excellence.
  • Diagnose opportunities to improve employee engagement and morale by utilizing tools to measure effectiveness (staff surveys, employee metrics) and support the development and implementation of realistic and meaningful actions plans based on survey results and staff feedback.

Advisory

  • Serve as a trusted coach and mediator to foster effective employee relations and facilitate conflict resolution where appropriate.
  • Assist with change management practices to enable organizational effectiveness.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited university in Business Administration, Human Resources, or related field required.
  • At least 5 years of previous Human Resources experience required.
  • Prior non-profit experience preferred.
  • Flexible and enthusiastic Human Resources professional who can successfully support both strategic and tactical human resources initiatives.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication, presentation and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with diverse stakeholders. Exceptional "People First" customer services skills.
  • Proficient with the Microsoft Office suite of tools (Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint) and other web-based applications.
  • Experience with HRIS and Applicant Tracking Systems required. Experience with Paylocity a plus.
  • Passion for the Foodbank mission and the ability to demonstrate SLAFB's Core Values: Stewardship, Teamwork, Agility and Respect.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Must be able to pass criminal background check, reference checks and drug screening.
