The St. Louis Area Foodbank is recruiting for a Chief Development Officer (CDO)


General Description/Position Summary

The Chief Development Officer (CDO) plays a key role in helping the St Louis Area Foodbank achieve greater reach, impact, and financial sustainability. This position is responsible for all fundraising, marketing and development activities including but not limited to major gifts, individual giving, planned giving, corporate relations, government and private foundation grants, and marketing and communications.

The CDO is a key strategic partner to the Executive Leadership Team (ELT). S/he serves as a member of the Executive Leadership Team to promote the vision and mission of the St Louis Area Foodbank and helps makes strategic decisions affecting the organization. Along with the Philanthropy and Marketing teams, the CDO guides our Board, staff, and volunteers to implement our core fund development and marketing strategies while building strong relationships across the bi-state region.

The CDO is ultimately responsible for stewarding existing relationships and forging new ones to build the St. Louis Area Foodbank's visibility and financial resources. S/he works to systematically, strategically, and effectively strengthen the organization's overall fundraising and marketing capacity. S/he has a focus on the expansion and diversification of our donor base/pipeline, while working closely with other team members to secure funding for programs, operations, and new strategic initiatives. This position owns the budgeting and strategic planning process for both the Philanthropy and Marketing Departments, and maintains a focus on coaching, training, and mentoring to develop the next generation of Philanthropy and Marketing leaders for the St. Louis Area Foodbank.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Design and implement a long-term, broad-based philanthropic giving and marketing strategy that maximizes impact in support of the mission of the St Louis Area Foodbank, while contributing to the financial health, public awareness, and longevity of the organization
  • Develop the case, build the strategy, and execute a comprehensive plan and compelling vision to expand the network of individuals, foundations and corporations who support the mission of the St Louis Area Foodbank through general support including restricted and unrestricted giving
  • Maintain portfolio of Major Corporate and Foundation Donors, building relationships with prospective donors while seeking a continuous growth of our annual renewal rate from current supporters
  • Steward and build relationships with a portfolio of major individual gift opportunities
  • Develop an organizational marketing and communications plan to increase visibility, volunteers, engagement, and outcomes of the strategic priorities of the organization
  • Lead and collaborate with the ELT in developing effective messages for new and broader audiences to connect more with partners, donors, and the general public
  • Develop new marketing initiatives to support engagement of a diverse group of potential supporters to the Foodbank, including but not limited to millennials, Gen Z as well as creative ways to engage students K-college with our mission in innovative and compelling ways
  • Supervise State Tax Credits program and assist in processing gifts of appreciated securities to aid in growing positive relationships with major gift donors
  • Conduct analytics on fundraising and marketing data to analyze trends, identify opportunities and disruptions to strategy, and adjust when necessary to ensure optimization of resources
  • Lead the planning, identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of donor groups and prospects ensuring relationships are prioritized and donors feel appreciated
  • Partner with the Chief Financial Officer to champion cross functional communication and transparency regarding monthly reconciliation and accountability efforts for all financial reporting, ensuring accuracy of all data
  • Manage the St Louis Area Foodbank Planned Giving and Endowment Programs, cultivating and creating long term revenue streams for long term financial growth and stability
  • Recruit, train and develop a focused, innovative team of professionals - responsibilities include training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; professional development; addressing complaints and resolving problems
  • Assist Senior Director of Philanthropy and Director of Marketing with establishing team and individual goals/metrics annually – developing their leadership skills for positions of increased responsibility
  • Lead Board of Directors sub-committee on Philanthropy and Marketing – facilitates strategic thinking around our long-term goals and objectives while bringing in diverse community perspectives to proactively solve for disruptions while facilitating innovations.
  • Devise and implement strategies for Board engagement that foster increased contributions in our philanthropic and marketing efforts and their impact across the region
  • Represent Foodbank at events and media opportunities to share our story/cultivate support
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • 15 years of experience in non-profit fundraising, with 5+ years of major donor fundraising with a proven track record of crafting strategies and successfully raising unrestricted funds, thriving on expanding networks and advocating for mission-driven programs
  • Visionary leader who can develop team members to assume positions of increased responsibility with an evolving and growing non-profit organization while creating a great organizational culture
  • Energetic self-starter with the ability to plan, set goals, monitor progress, and evaluate results while working collaboratively as part of a team in a flexible, dynamic environment
  • Proven reputation for integrity and professionalism. Strategic thinker with a proven track record of driving results both personally and as a leader of a diverse and talented team.
  • Excellent communication, management, and interpersonal skills. Strong relationship building and managerial experience required including developing team members to lead at higher levels
  • Ability to meet deadlines and manage multiple projects with attention to detail and thrive in a fast-paced, ever-changing environment
  • Experience with and detailed knowledge of Raisers Edge NXT strongly preferred
  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited four-year college or university (Masters preferred) with emphasis in marketing, communications, business, or nonprofit administration
  • Experience in managing a diverse group of donors and volunteers, projects, and workload
  • Must be able to pass criminal background check and drug screening

Special events and other projects related to meeting the annual fund goal may require evening and / or weekend work. Meeting attendance may require overnight travel.
