The Mission of the St. Louis Area Foodbank is to build stronger communities by empowering people with food and hope. As the region's largest food distribution charity dedicated to feeding those in need, we are working to create a stronger, healthier bi-state region where no one goes to be hungry. The Data Management VISTA works under the direction of the Programs Manager, and the support of the Programs Team, to ensure the organization and its programs gather and have the necessary information to best meet the needs of the 26 counties we serve. The service year is meant to be a rewarding experience where the individual gains transferable skillsets essential to every nonprofit.


This position requires someone who:


  • Can work well with a team of people
  • Is organized & able to manage time effectively
  • Can work efficiently & independently
  • Basic knowledge of Tableau software is a plus
  • Is open to new ideas & welcome feedback
  • Can analyze and compile data reports
  • Is extremely comfortable making cold calls and going out to various communities to survey clients
  • Excels in working with detail, basic computer skills and excellent excel skills
  • Has evaluation experience, preferred
  • Enjoys writing processes, documenting procedures and compiling recommendations

Main responsibilities include:


  1. Assess and learn the Foodbank's current model(s) for gathering feedback across the various programs and evaluate the overall quality of data the Foodbank collects for education and distributions programs.
  2. Maintain current data collection models through the end of the fiscal year (June 30, 2022) including the surveying of clients and partners as needed.
  3. Continue using data visualization tools, i.e. Tableau, to develop monthly/ annual reporting and drive improved strategies and outcomes.
  4. Revise and/or create evaluation systems for Foodbank Programs and identify best methods based on research findings.
  5. Maintain and revise Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) that outline data collection methods as evaluation systems evolve.
  6. Maintain tracking systems, update those systems as needed and continually adjust visual display of data using Tableau as new data is gathered. As a result, provide team members with feedback on the best ways and places to deploy programming.

The above list is not exhaustive; there will be times where you will be asked to help participate and potentially lead out other projects on an as needed basis. This can include areas outside of your immediate area of responsibility. These projects can come from the Programs Manager or other staff.

  • 35 hours per week with the flexibility to work more as needed; One-year commitment.
  • Allowed to have secondary employment with prior approval from supervisor; VISTA responsibilities must always be the first priority.
  • Pay: Approximately $15,001/year stipend; end-of-service educational award of approximately $6,000 or a cash stipend of approximately $1,800 is available *All dependent upon service year completion

Project Name: St. Louis Area Foodbank

Project Period: August 30, 2021 to August 29, 2022


Goal of the Project:

The goal of the St. Louis Area Foodbank VISTA Program is to increase the number of meals the Foodbank provides by 5% each year. To do this, the Data Management VISTA will gather and analyze demographic data on the 26 counties the Foodbank serves and data on the success of the Foodbank's programs. This will allow the Foodbank to identify communities most in need, deliver nutritious food to them in a way that meets them where they are, and implement strategies that help us measure and ensure our success. By increasing access to food, we enable the one in six families who face hunger to save precious dollars that they can then use on health care costs, utilities, unexpected costs such as repairs, etc.


Objective of the Assignment (Period of Performance August 30 December 31, 2021): Assess and learn the Foodbank's current model(s) for gathering feedback across the various programs and evaluate the overall quality of data the Foodbank collects for education/outreach and distributions programs.


Member Activities:

  1. Review current program models, the evaluation mechanisms for each, and data used to determine where programs are deployed.
  2. Maintain current data collection models through the end of the fiscal year (June 30, 2022) including the surveying of clients and partners as needed.
  3. Research best practices regarding data collection for programs that do not have a set evaluation program and provide recommendations for each program model, i.e. Nutrition Education, Healthcare Initiatives
  4. Continue to use Tableau software to visually display data and drive improved strategies and outcomes.

Objective of the Assignment (Period of Performance January 1 March 31, 2022): Revise and/or create evaluation systems and identify best geographic locations for programs based on research findings.


Member Activities:

  1. Evaluate and revise Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) that outline data collection methods.
  2. Maintain current data collection models through the end of the fiscal year (June 30, 2022).
  3. Implement new data collection models for programs without metrics or programs with metrics that can be adjusted at the beginning of the next fiscal year.
  4. Begin entering community demographic data in Tableau to visualize community need and determine locations to deploy programs.

Objective of the Assignment (Period of Performance May 1 June 30, 2022): Update and Build data tracking systems (if needed) to reflect unique program data collections and continue to develop visual displays using Tableau, a data visualization software.


Member Activities:

  1. With staff, revise programmatic goals for FY23 (starts July 1) based on new models, if needed.
  2. Ensure a smooth transition from current tracking models to new ones, if necessary, as of July 1.
  3. Maintain current models through the end of the fiscal year (June 30, 2022).
  4. Continue implementation of new models for programs without metrics or programs with metrics that can be adjusted mid-fiscal year.
  5. In collaboration with staff, develop a plan to visually display data in Tableau to show the Foodbank's efforts to funders, board members, partners, etc., to demonstrate community need to staff and key stakeholders, and to determine where to deploy programs in the future.

Objective of the Assignment (Period of Performance July 1, 2022 August 29, 2022): Maintain new tracking systems, update those systems as needed and continually adjust visual display of data using Tableau as new data is gathered. As a result, provide team members with feedback on the best ways and places to deploy programming.


  1. Maintain new tracking models and gather appropriate data.
  2. Update data in Tableau to maintain a visual display of activity using most recent data.
  3. Continually evaluate models and adjust as necessary.
  4. Work with volunteer program to establish a strategy for recruiting volunteers to create a sustainable model equipped to meet programmatic and community needs.
