The Mission of the St. Louis Area Foodbank is to build stronger communities by empowering people with food and hope. As the region's largest food distribution charity dedicated to feeding those in need, we are working to create a stronger, healthier bi-state region where no one goes to be hungry. The Summer VISTA Grocery Rescue Member will work with Grocers and Retailers to connect food that has the potential to become food waste with a foodbank pantry. The VISTA will achieve this goal through performing store visits, collecting data, and work with logistics to match the store with a pantry in need. The focus of this project will be working closely with the community to increase food donations in our Grocery & Retail network to provide hunger relief while also reducing food waste in the community.

This position requires someone who:


  • Can work well with a team of people
  • Organized & able to manage time effectively
  • Can work efficiently & independently
  • Retail/Grocery Clerk Experience preferred
  • Can talk to anyone
  • Can take notes efficiently
  • Open to new ideas & welcomes feedback
  • Can analyze and compile data reports
  • Extremely comfortable making cold calls and walking into the backroom/receiving area of retail stores.
  • Excels in working with detail, basic computer skills including Microsoft & Google Drive applications.
  • Reliable transportation & a valid driver's license and insurance (REQUIRED)
  • Willing to travel via car with personal vehicle within our 26-county service territory 4 days out of the week.


AmeriCorps VISTA Summer Associate (SA) members:

  • Members serve will be paid $514 bi-weekly, which means they will earn around $2,056 for their 8-week commitment.
  • Members will be reimbursed for any related project travel expenses bi-weekly.
  • Summer Associates may perform direct service activities in addition to capacity-building activities.
  • After successfully completing a term of service, Summer Associates may receive a Segal AmeriCorps Education Award of $1,311.11 which can be used to pay for college or student loans, or an end-of-service cash stipend of $276.64.
  • Term of service estimated to be 05/30/22 – 08/21/22. Negotiable but must serve a full 8 weeks.
  • Due to the short length of this service, Summer Associates are not provided any personal or medical leave.

Goal of the Project:

The goal of the St. Louis Area Foodbank VISTA Program is to feed food insecure individuals by increasing the food donations the foodbank distributes through the Grocery Rescue Program. The VISTA will assist with educating, encouraging, and coordinating food donations from area retail stores to nearby pantries, feeding more neighbors and improving the Grocery Rescue program at the foodbank. In addition, the VISTA will assist with data entry and tracking of store visits.


Objective of the Assignment: Connect Retail Stores that are needing to donate food to pantries that have a need for food-- Decreasing food waste and increasing food access.


Member Activities:

  1. Visit retail banner locations with educational material, educate store managers about Grocery Rescue program.
  2. Visit with pantries that receive food donations through the Grocery Rescue program and provide solutions to any issues that may arise.
  3. Enter data into Foodbank tracking systems and analyze.
  4. Travel within our 26-county service territory in either Missouri or Illinois based on assigned area.

Objective of the Assignment: Onboard new stores within the Foodbank's territory and link new stores to pantries in need.


  1. Attend events to distribute material about the Grocery Rescue program.
  2. Help to organize marketing materials related to the Grocery Rescue program.
  3. Create a marketing solicitation plan to target additional retail stores within our network to grow retail donations.
  1. Creating marketing and educational materials related to the Grocery Rescue program.
  2. May have additional activities as needed by the St. Louis Area Foodbank.
