AmeriCorps Summer VISTA Community Resource Member

NOTE: This position requires a 8 weeks of full time service (35 hours/week) with no time off.

The Mission of the St. Louis Area Foodbank is building a stronger bi-state region by nourishing people, empowering communities, and transforming systems. The Summer VISTA Community Resource member ensures seniors, individuals with disabilities, families with children, and individuals experiencing poverty and hunger have the necessary information and ability to apply for SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program), formerly known as Food Stamps as well as access to Medicaid and additional resources. The focus of this project will be working closely with the community to assist them in the process of applying for the SNAP & Medicaid benefits and follow up case management, including interview prep, to combat hunger.

• Willing to travel within our 26-county service territory
• Enjoys writing processes, documenting procedures, and compiling recommendations
• Open to learning opportunities and creating educational material

AmeriCorps VISTA Summer Associate (SA) members:

• Members who serve will be paid $675 bi-weekly, which means they will earn around $2,700 for their 8-week commitment.
• Summer Associates may perform direct service activities in addition to capacity-building activities.
• After successfully completing a term of service, Summer Associates may receive a Segal AmeriCorps Education Award of $1,459.26 which can be used to pay for college or student loans, or an end-of-service cash stipend of about $280.
• While we may offer some flexibility, the term of service is 06/12/23 - 08/06/23.
• IMPORTANT NOTE: Due to the short length of this service, Summer Associates are not eligible for any personal or medical leave during their term of service. All members must work full time (35 hours/week) for the full 8-week term.

• This is a hybrid position, eligible for teleservice / remote work. Eligible candidates must reside in Missouri.

Project Period: Project Period: Members serve an 8-week term through the summer. Start and end dates are June 12 - August 6, 2023. Some flexibility may be considered for exceptional candidates.

Goal of the Project:

The goal of the St. Louis Area Foodbank VISTA Program is to help food insecure individuals apply and receive SNAP & Medicaid benefits through direct application assistance, information distribution, and training partner sites. In addition, the VISTA will assist with data entry, tracking and analytics.

Objective of the Assignment: Educate our neighbors on the benefits of SNAP & Medicaid, how to apply and follow up to ensure data is tracked correctly.

Member Activities:

1. Attend events to distribute SNAP and Medicaid application information.
2. Enter data into Foodbank tracking systems and analyze.
3. Creating marketing and education materials related to SNAP & Medicaid
4. May have additional activities as needed by the St. Louis Area Foodbank.

Objective of the Assignment: Support our neighbors in completing SNAP and Medicaid applications as well as providing external referrals for additional services as needed.

Member Activities:

1. Work throughout the community and virtually to obtain referrals for SNAP & Medicaid applications at current partner locations while identifying potential partners.
2. Follow up on SNAP/Medicaid application requests and calls.
3. Travel within our 26-county service territory in both Missouri and Illinois.
