The Mission of the St. Louis Area Foodbank is to build stronger communities by empowering people with food and hope. As the region's largest food distribution charity dedicated to feeding those in need, we are working to create a stronger, healthier bi-state region where no one goes to be hungry. The Summer VISTA Community Resource member ensures seniors, individuals with disabilities, families with children, and individuals experiencing poverty and hunger have the necessary information and ability to apply for SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program), formerly known as Food Stamps as well as access to additional resources. The focus of this project will be working closely with the community to assist them in the process of applying for the SNAP program and follow up case management, including interview prep, to combat hunger.

  • Extremely comfortable making cold calls to survey clients

  • Has evaluation experience, preferred
  • Reliable transportation & a valid driver's license and insurance
  • Willing to travel within our 26-county service territory
  • Enjoys writing processes, documenting procedures, and compiling recommendations
  • Open to learning opportunities and creating educational material

AmeriCorps VISTA Summer Associate (SA) members:

  • Members serve will be paid $514 bi-weekly, which means they will earn around $2,056 for their 8-week commitment.
  • Summer Associates may perform direct service activities in addition to capacity-building activities.
  • After successfully completing a term of service, Summer Associates may receive a Segal AmeriCorps Education Award of $1,311.11 which can be used to pay for college or student loans, or an end-of-service cash stipend of $276.64.
  • Term of service estimated to be 05/30/22 – 08/21/22. Negotiable but must serve a full 8 weeks.
  • Due to the short length of this service, Summer Associates are not provided any personal or medical leave.

May 30 – July 24

June 13 – August 7

Goal of the Project:

The goal of the St. Louis Area Foodbank VISTA Program is to help food insecure individuals apply and receive SNAP benefits through direct application assistance, information distribution, training partner sites and hosting block parties. In addition, the VISTA will assist with data entry, tracking and analytics.


Objective of the Assignment: Assist our neighbors in completing SNAP applications as well as providing external referrals for additional services as needed.


Member Activities:

  1. Work throughout the community and virtually to complete SNAP applications at current partner locations while identifying potential partners.
  2. Maintain flexibility and adapting to community needs by following Covid-19 regulations, whether in person or virtual.
  3. Follow up on SNAP application requests and calls.
  4. Travel within our 26-county service territory in both Missouri and Illinois.

Objective of the Assignment: Assist with educating our neighbors on the benefits of SNAP, how to apply and follow up to ensure data is tracked correctly.


  1. Attend events to distribute SNAP application information.
  2. Help to organize and host community block parties.
  3. Enter data into Foodbank tracking systems and analyze.
  1. Creating marketing and education materials related to SNAP
  2. May have additional activities as needed by the St. Louis Area Foodbank.
